P&LE Berkshires

By Jack Polaritz

This book is the most complete history of the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad’s Bershire steam locomotives ever published. It tells the story of the development and operational history of the P&LE’s last new steam power. Even though the "Little Giant" had already started converting to diesels, parent New York Central ordered the company to take 10 2-8-4 Berkshire's from ALCo, one of the last steam engines built by that company. Only seven copies were delivered. Book is an authoritative history, based on the railroad’s documents and interviews with the people who ran these locomotives. They were constant problems right from the start. These Class A-2a's were not balanced properly, causing the track to take a beating. The ride was incredibly rough. Too long for the company's roundhouses, lengthier stalls had to be erected. A number of never before published historical documents are included to support the text for the reader’s edification. Also included are previously unpublished phtographs, drawings and maps to bring the intriguing story of P&LE’s Bershires to life. Finally, the P&LE banished them to pusher service on the Central, working out of the terminal in Bellefontaine, Ohio. While there has been much speculation in the railroading community, little historic fact has previously emerged about these locomotives. This book enlightens the reader with an accurate history, in a clear and interesting format. Readers are provided with a complete background relating to the Berkshire’s creation and the railroad’s frustrating struggle to avoid having to make the unwanted acquisition. The complete story of these locomotives that never should have been is presented from their inception to demise. Hardound, 8.5x11, 226 pages, photos, maps, data and text.

These books have been out of print for some time and are selling on eBay for almost $100.00.  We have obtained a limited number of these from the author and are offering them at a deeply discounted price to members.  Don't miss out on these few remaining copies. When they are gone, they will be gone forever. Take this opportunity to add this important part of the NYCS history to your collection!!!!
